What are phthalates?
Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are synthetic chemicals commonly added to fragrance oils to help scents last longer and stick to fabrics. They act as fixatives, ensuring that the aroma lingers. But while they make a fragrance “perform” better, phthalates can be harmful to human health and indoor air quality.
The harmful effects of phthalates
Phthalates are not just harmless additives. Multiple studies have linked them to serious health concerns:
Hormone disruption: Classified as endocrine disruptors, phthalates interfere with hormones, affecting reproductive health and development.
Respiratory problems: Fragrance products with phthalates can trigger asthma, allergies, and breathing difficulties.
Neurological issues: Exposure has been tied to migraines, headaches, and poor concentration.
Indoor air quality risks: Phthalates contribute to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that build up in the air you breathe at home.
A 2016 study found that 34.7% of the U.S. population reported health problems when exposed to fragranced consumer products. Symptoms included migraines, respiratory issues, and skin reactions. Even more alarming, 15.1% lost workdays or jobs due to fragrance exposure.
Hidden under “fragrance”
The biggest issue? Lack of transparency. In the U.S., companies aren’t required to disclose all fragrance ingredients. Instead, dozens of chemicals—including phthalates—can be hidden under the word “fragrance” or “parfum.”
Even products marketed as “green” or “organic” may still emit hazardous air pollutants. Research shows more than 60% of consumers would stop using fragranced products if they knew they released these pollutants.
